Pakistani cleric: Mourning for Imam Hussain Is an Inalienable Right

Hujjat al-Islam Syed Nasser Shirazi, Secretary General of the Pakistan Muslim Unity Council, strongly condemned the restrictions imposed on Ashura mourning ceremonies in Islamabad, calling them a violation of religious freedom and a direct affront to the cultural and spiritual identity of the Muslim nation.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Hujjat al-Islam Syed Nasser Shirazi, Secretary General of the Pakistan Muslim Unity Council, strongly condemned the restrictions imposed on Ashura mourning ceremonies in Islamabad, calling them a violation of religious freedom and a direct affront to the cultural and spiritual identity of the Muslim nation.

In a press conference held to protest these limitations, Shirazi expressed deep concern over what he described as “illegal and discriminatory actions” by authorities.

“Mourning Imam Hussain (AS) is not only the religious right of Shi’a Muslims, but also the voice of every awakened and freedom-loving conscience across the world,” he stated.

He emphasized that Ashura is not merely a historical tragedy, but a timeless symbol of resistance, justice, and moral courage.

“As Imam Hussain (AS) declared, ‘Someone like me will never pledge allegiance to someone like Yazid,’ meaning that the pursuit of justice must never yield to tyranny. This message continues to inspire oppressed people everywhere.”

Addressing the current situation in the region, Shirazi drew parallels between the tragedy of Karbala and modern injustices.

“The crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza, carried out with the backing of global arrogant powers like the United States, reflect the same oppressive ideology as Yazidism. Today, Palestine is the battlefield of truth versus falsehood, and the Husseini spirit calls on all free nations to resist oppression.”

He also praised the Islamic Republic of Iran’s resistance in the face of aggression:

“Iran stands as the bearer of the Karbala legacy. Through steadfastness inspired by Ashura, it has continually defied domination and forced the retreat of enemies. This resilience is rooted in the values of truth and dignity.”

Shirazi condemned the selective enforcement of restrictions in Islamabad, pointing out the contradiction in allowing political and non-religious gatherings while targeting religious ceremonies.

“This is blatant discrimination. Mourning for Imam Hussain (AS) is a matter of faith, and we will never tolerate restrictions that trample on our religious identity.”

He concluded with a firm warning:

“The people have shown their devotion in the days of Ashura and will rise again with the same resolve during Arbaeen. No amount of pressure will silence a nation that loves the Ahl al-Bayt (AS). Mourning for Hussain is our right, our belief, and our identity—and we will defend it at all costs.”
